Ancestor Spirits

Russell Brown

$5,000

This artwork captures the spirit of my ancestors by blending diverse cultural symbols and traditions, with the night sky. The painting features a vast, starry sky, where luminous stars are connected by glowing lines that represent my family’s Songlines – spiritual pathways linking my people to our country and family.

These lines trace the journeys of ancestors who began in a single place on country and travelled away, settling in new places far from home. The composition reflects a fusion of cultural motifs, drawing from various traditions that hold the night sky in reverence.

The interconnected stars symbolize the transmission of knowledge, stories, and traditions across generations, showing how different cultures are linked by shared experiences and the universal significance of the night sky. As my ancestors travelled, guided by the stars, they established their communities, passing down wisdom that remains alive in the Songline.

This artwork celebrates the diversity of human experience while highlighting the deep, shared bond with the night sky and our collective roots as Aboriginal people.
