When I lived on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, I used to go spear fishing on the west side of the island in the late afternoons after work. The tide would be low and the water would be far out. As I would walk towards the water I could see tall figures in the distance hunting in the shallows.
Sometimes I thought there was family there before me but as I would get closer I could see the silhouettes were the jabiru hunting. I knew it would be safe to go into the water where the jabiru were, because no crocodiles would be around.
This painting represents what I would see in the late afternoons on Groote. The Jabiru in the shallows and the path of the setting sun over Arnhem Land and the Gulf of Carpentaria.
